CLC rating: Educable
Rating Comments: During the 2014 election campaign, David Alward has repeatedly promised that his PC government will continue to deny public taxdollars to the Morgentaler killing centre in Fredericton, and indeed, to all private, for-profit abortion businesses. He has also promised to preserve the current restriction on abortions in New Brunswick. Those restrictions include requiring 2-doctors to sign off on the abortion as 'medically necessary" before scarce taxpayer dollars are funneled in to pay for it. He will also maintain the restriction that only "specialists" will be allowed to commit abortions, as opposed to opening it up to nurses and other types of health care workers. David Alward is the only party leader who will protect taxpayer money from being diverted towards private abortion mills and maintaining the modicum of restrictions to the procedure that currently exist. The Liberal, NDP and Green party leaders have all said they favour financing baby-killings committed at Morgentaler's private abortion centre and repealing the existing restrictions. Alward has not answered CLC's 2014 election questionnaire.

Bill 37, to protect the Conscience rights of marriage commissioners
Called 'An Act to Amend the Marriage Act', a private members bill by MLA David Alward. It was designed to affirm the rights of those clergy and clerks of the court (marriage commissioners) who have conscientious objections to performing same-sex marriages, and was needed to prevent them from being prosecuted. Alward referred to the situation of Regina, Sask. marriage commissioner Orville Nichols, who was dragged before a provincial human rights tribunal for refusing to officiate a same-sex wedding because of religious objections. The bill was defeated upon 2nd reading. [March 2007]
Supported ok
Position on diverting taxpayer $$ towards paying for abortions at Morgentaler's private "clinic"
In 2014, the Liberal Party Leader in NB came out against the long-standing ban on public funding for private abortion facilities. For decades, all 3 major parties have agreed that the province shall not fund abortions at private abortion 'clinics'. Only abortions committed at hospitals are publicly funded. After an organized campaign to fund the Morgentaler abortuary, the Liberal Leader came out strongly in favour of fully-funded, abortion-on-demand.
Opposes ok
Position on cancelling the provincial requirement that 2 doctors sign off on the abortion as 'medically necessary' before it gets funded by taxpayers.
This is the current, decades old policy of the New Brunswick government. It was agreed upon by all major parties until 2014 when the Liberal Leader suggested this modicum of restriction needs to be removed, in the name of 'a woman's right to choose'.
Opposes ok

Here are quotes from DAVID ALWARD on various life and family issues:

In response to a rash of infanticide incidents, he supported a proposed 'Safe Haven Law' that would allow troubled parents to surrender their newborn to a hospital within 72 hours of birth, without fear of prosecution for child abandonment, thus encouraging adoption rather than infanticide:  "We realize there are these concerns, and they will be discussed and addressed in legislature so the law can be perfected to best serve our province‚Ķ What were trying to do is save the life of the child. [The New Brunswick Beacon, "Safe haven law not the answer, says N.B. women's agency", Oct. 27, 2009]

Alward responsed to Opposition party criticism, while defending his amendment to protect the rights of marriage commissioners opposed to same-sex 'marriage',  "I believe this legislation most certainly will stand up to a legal challenge" [LifeSiteNews, "Activists Fight Bill Permitting Marriage Commissioners to Refuse Homosexual Marriages, Mar. 5, 2007] [LifeSiteNews, "Activists Fight Bill Permitting Marriage Commissioners to Refuse Homosexual Marriages, Mar. 5, 2007] [LifeSiteNews, "Activists Fight Bill Permitting Marriage Commissioners to Refuse Homosexual Marriages, Mar. 5, 2007] [LifeSiteNews, "Activists Fight Bill Permitting Marriage Commissioners to Refuse Homosexual Marriages, Mar. 5, 2007] [LifeSiteNews, "Activists Fight Bill Permitting Marriage Commissioners to Refuse Homosexual Marriages, Mar. 5, 2007] [LifeSiteNews, "Activists Fight Bill Permitting Marriage Commissioners to Refuse Homosexual Marriages, Mar. 5, 2007] [LifeSiteNews, "Activists Fight Bill Permitting Marriage Commissioners to Refuse Homosexual Marriages, Mar. 5, 2007] [LifeSiteNews, "Activists Fight Bill Permitting Marriage Commissioners to Refuse Homosexual Marriages, Mar. 5, 2007] [LifeSiteNews, "Activists Fight Bill Permitting Marriage Commissioners to Refuse Homosexual Marriages, Mar. 5, 2007] [LifeSiteNews, "Activists Fight Bill Permitting Marriage Commissioners to Refuse Homosexual Marriages, Mar. 5, 2007] [LifeSiteNews, "Activists Fight Bill Permitting Marriage Commissioners to Refuse Homosexual Marriages, Mar. 5, 2007] [LifeSiteNews, "Activists Fight Bill Permitting Marriage Commissioners to Refuse Homosexual Marriages, Mar. 5, 2007] [LifeSiteNews, "Activists Fight Bill Permitting Marriage Commissioners to Refuse Homosexual Marriages, Mar. 5, 2007] [LifeSiteNews, "Activists Fight Bill Permitting Marriage Commissioners to Refuse Homosexual Marriages, Mar. 5, 2007] [LifeSiteNews, "Activists Fight Bill Permitting Marriage Commissioners to Refuse Homosexual Marriages, Mar. 5, 2007]
